I get a lot a compliment on my teeth being really white (not that I complimenting myself right now) but you should know that I have a strict regimen to take care of my smile.

What you should first know is that your natural teeth color depends on your genetics. Some people are lucky to have pearly white teeth while others have more yellowy tint. If you belong to the second category, don't expect any miracle results from my advice. The below will only help prevent your teeth from getting any stains or yellow tint but it cannot dramatically change your natural color. If it is what you are looking for, you will have to go for a more radical solution and check with your dentist.

  • Get an Electric Toothbrush and brush at least twice a day
Believe me, it makes all the difference because electric toothbrushes are way more efficient and can reach more areas. Also for the lazy one, you get better result with less effort since the brush is doing all of it.
You need to brush your teeth after your meals. Many people will brush their teeth when they wake up which in my opinion is useless. If you want to remove morning bad breath, use a mouthwash that targets the bacterias responsible.

Whether you have a manual or electric toothbrush, you should change it every two to three months.
  • Complete your cleansing with Flossing
My dentist recommend me to complete my cleansing with a dental floss because some areas are still not accessible to brush, even electric. I usually do this once a day, before going to bed in order to deep cleanse but ideally you should do it after each meal so I always keep a small box in my purse.

  • Keep a Toothbrush/Toothpaste Kit with you or at the office
Yes, I am the psycho you will find at the office bathroom brushing her teeth after lunch break, but hey, at least I do have clean and white teeth ;)
This may seem a bit extreme, but it is just another habit to take and it will also help you avoid for good the embarrassing situation when you end up with food stuck between your teeth.

  • STOP SMOKING
I will never say this enough. Smoking damages your lungs, skin, hair...and teeth. Not only it will yellow and darken your teeth (because of the tar and nicotine) but smoking is also responsible for increasing the build up of tartar, bad bread and developing gum disease that leads to tooth loss.

  • Avoid staining foods or minimize the consequence by swishing with water.
Wine, Tea, Coffee, Cola, Sport drinks, Berries, Sauces, Sweets... all of these contains pigments that will darken and yellow your teeth.
If you cannot avoid them (I am a huge tea addict) and you don't want to brush your teeth (it could have the opposite effect if done too often) think about drinking one glass of water just after having these foods/drinks.
  • Baking Soda can naturally whiten your teeth
My secret recipe to whitens my teeth without any chemical treatment is too brush my teeth with a bit of baking soda mixed to the toothpaste, and this will instantly brighten my smile. Don't overdo it though because it can be a bit abrasive on the long-term.

  • Visit your Dentist once to twice a year to remove the tartar build up
Even with all the above precaution, you may not be able to get rid of all the tartar build up. It is important that you visit your dentist at least once a year, first for a check-up (you never know...) and second to have a tartar removal and deep cleansing.
And don't forget that you are never fully dressed without a smile :)
