This is not sponsored by Nivea. I just really liked the video and the concept because it explains perfectly how UV and sunscreen work :)
Beach time, summer and sun usually means tanning. However, this time of the year can also lead to sun burn an more damages that I discussed in my previous post. I really liked the above ad by Nivea in collaboration with the artist Thomas Leveritt who initially created a video called "How the sun sees you". It shows you how vulnerable your skin is and why it is important to protect it with sun screen.
There are so many sun protection available now, it can be a bit confusing, especially when choosing the right SPF (=Sun Protection Factor). Most of you probably already know that the higher the SPF, the higher the protection. Things get more complicated when picking the right SPF for your skin and this will depend on two things : your phototype and the sun exposure you are getting.
Phototype is a way to sort people by their reaction to sun exposure, which will depends to the amount of melanin in their body (skin/hair/eyes). Knowing your phototype is therefore really important if you want to prevent yourself from the sun damages, which again can lead to skin cancer. The phototype is assessed on a scale from 1 to 6:
Pick the right SPF now!
The more melanin you have, the darker your skin is, but the skin also produces more melanin during sun exposure to protect itself from burning. You may understand now why people in sunnier region of the world are darker. This amount of melanin also determine the color of your hair and eyes, explaining why people with dark skin don't have blue eyes (blue eyes having the less pigment and are therefore more sensitive as well).
